Together with its constituent members, the World Medical Association is committed to promoting health-related human rights for all people at the international and national levels. As health professionals, physicians have a key role to play in providing high quality care to all patients without discrimination and preventing and reporting acts of torture and ill treatment that constitute gross human rights violations. Physicians are also often victims of human rights violations, especially when they act on behalf of the human rights of their patients. The WMA supports the human rights of physicians and often intervenes on behalf of physicians who have been persecuted or imprisoned for their human rights-related actions.
